Scoot Over: Including the creativity of those with disabilities in dance choreography

Workshop date: June 1st, 2024 from 10AM till noon
What happens when we put individuals with disabilities in the role of Choreographer?
In this two-hour workshop open to dance (or gym) teachers, choreographers, directors, and performers, Teaching Artist Angie Nyquist will share her experiences showcasing dancers with disabilities in the creative process.
Partnering with ARTS for ALL Wisconsin and the Children’s Long-Term Support Waiver, Angie has brought dance into the lives of children with disabilities for over 20 years. Her past work with Point Dance Ensemble in collaboration with ARTS for ALL Wisconsin includes works titled, About Bev (2018), Free to Be Me (2018), and Laura (2019) all showcasing dancers with disabilities. Her most recent project, Dance with Me, premiered on March 2, 2024, in Stevens Point.
Participants will view videos of these works, learn about the process of creating them, participate in an inclusive dance session, and network.
This is the second in AFA’s series of free Professional Development workshops in Adaptive and Inclusive Dance made possible by a grant from the Madison Community Foundation. We welcome educators, choreographers, professional dancers, and community members who wish to learn more about inclusive dance practices.
Location: 6515 Watts Road, Madison, WI 53719

Dance With Me
Amelia communicates with her whole self. Over four years of dancing together, Angie studied Amelia’s unique movement signature, breaking her dance into individual vocabulary that she translated for the dancers. Point Dance Ensemble Dancers then used that vocabulary to create a celebratory dance performed in the 2024 Annual Performance.
Point Dance Ensemble is a Central Wisconsin, non-profit youth dance company founded in January 2000 and is not affiliated with any specific dance studio. The mission of PDE is to inspire a lasting love and appreciation of dance to youths by providing live music and fostering unique collaborations with local artists and organizations.  Photo credit: Marki Photography

Point Dance Ensemble 2019 Choreography Showcase

Laura

“While you can find examples of people with disabilities dancing and performing in groups with nondisabled dancers, it is far less common to see a person with a disability in the role of teacher or choreographer. I wondered what it would be like to see a dance piece through the eyes of a student with disabilities; what if they were the choreographer? I thought of Laura immediately because she has few typical outlets for expressing herself. Laura has visual impairment and Cerebral Palsy. She is also non-verbal and uses a wheelchair. I wanted to see what Laura would create.  This piece is unique because it put Laura in the driver’s seat.  She got to show us what movements should go in the dance.  If you ever get to see Laura watch Olivia dance the piece, it will be obvious to you how delighted she is in how it turned out.” -Angie Nyquist, Choreography Facilitator
